Main part - PSU - get one that will power your system that is over the minimum specs. OCZ makes some good ones. Make sure you use a "power supply calculator" you can find online to find out how much watts you need...then add 100-150 watts for future growth.

Mother board + CPU - pick a combo that had Core 2 duo or the AMD equivelent.

RAM - pick something that goes with your board and has good timings. Research timings if you don't understand this.

Video card - Get one that will power your game well. Spending over 100 bucks is not unheard of.

Here's a combo I used for gaming and it does fairly well but may not be up to your specs depending on what game you are thinking of playing.
    CPU

    Mobo

    PSU

This is a suggestion as the system I built co0st 750 bucks but you can go as high as you want with different parts.

the system that Shadowsedge has is a dam good gaming platform and all most the same as the system that i have myself but with a few minor differences.

    i used this cpu:

this is the retail version and will require you to purchase a heat sink and fan to fit it, i manage to get hold of an oem one at the time of purchase but can't find it around the new egg site at the moment.

i used the exact same mobo and ram,

but opted for the 700w psu

and the xfx 9800gtx black edition graphics card,

both systems will play games with awesome results it all comes down to personal preference with parts and your budget at the time of build.
